Multimedia Murals and Installations

Students work together throughout multiple classrooms to create a permanent or semi-permanent mural or installation for their school. These collaborative projects can address a theme or have a curricular connection. Students may work individually on a piece to contribute to the large-scale image, or they may work in small groups on sections of the image.

Session 1: Students study the elements of design and create an observational drawing of their subject using these concepts.

Sessions 2 and 3: In small groups, students create colors and textures using Gelli printmaking or painted paper which will be used to create collages of their image that will be contributed to the mural or installation. While those small groups are working with the artist, other students will create multimedia images to further explore their subject.

Session 4+: Students will use their printed or painted paper to cut into shapes to create a collage which will be placed onto the mural or installation.

Each student will create a section of a larger scale themed mural that can be connected by lines that run throughout all the pieces. Students can use any medium of their choosing and each piece will be unique.
