ARTIST PROFILE

Yingwana Khosa

Teaching Philosophy

In Africa, before the phones were invented, the drums were the only way to communicate from one village to another. They also play a part in weddings, funerals and village festivities. The drums bring the dancers and singers together. Playing drums is like writing a composition and telling a story.

When you grow in a community of traditional music and dance, it becomes your daily routine. Yingwana believes in drums as a way of communication and sharing the feeling and beauty of the village. He works with youth to gain knowledge and understanding of how the drums can bring people together, and to help them to become active in their community.

To be taught by elders in a community creates a good feeling and a powerful experience. The wisdom is passed down from one generation to the next. Through drums and dance we can encourage youth to be a positive influence in their communities and schools
