Ngoma Ngoma is the drum and the song. In this performance Yingwana plays the characters and casts the audience as well. They warm up together and then tell the story of life in the village, naming the days of the week- the bundles of laundry the mothers take with them to the river. Students hear and see the washing dance, they dance a rhythm dance together and learn some of how dances were created on the continent using a tool familiar to the students- a clock! Then Yingwana introduces the can dance- from its origin with sticks, stones and bones as sound makers through to the introduction of Coca-Cola to South Africa and the adoption of the cans as instruments for the dance. The show ends with the Gumboot Dance- joining boot-slapping and stomping together to make rhythms that rise from the floor. Time allowing the entire audience participates and feels the sound rising from the earth.
This is an engaging performance that invites students to listen fully and be part of the story. Audiences will have a high energy treat- no one left behind with Chief Mabinyana.
