Visual Expressions

Students learn how to use art to express their feelings and create a unique found object self portrait. We will do a number of intuitive art exercises that include drawing and collage and explore abstract art as a way to express feelings. The final project is essentially loose parts play with a found objects collection. Each artist creates a self portrait with the found materials. The portraits are photographed and each student will get a printed or digital copy of their self portrait (but not the found object piece itself). The portraits can also be made into a book for the classroom and/or community. This residency is a 3, 4 or 5 session program.
Process:
-– We begin every session with a different grounding exercise, learning a number of self soothing tools throughout the residency.
– We talk about feelings and how important they are, how they feel in our bodies and how we can express them. We practice drawing our feelings.
– We take an inventory of values and explore what makes each person unique. We discuss judgment. We learn about the visual elements of joy and practice collage.
– We explore using found materials as art supplies. How do things have meaning? How can we express who we are with these materials?

About the Artist

Beth Wilson

Beth is a Northwest native and has been making art for over 30 years. She pulls materials from everyday life, relying on them to guide her and give their experience to her artwork. Sometimes her work is small and made alone; gestures of gratitude. Sometimes it is big and made in community; gestures of transformation. What it all has in common is the power to create a sense of connection; to self, and community and the planet that sustains us. Our white supremist culture has stripped us of this sense of connection, of our humanness. With each piece she is tending to our loss, cultivating connections, and strengthening routes and bridges back to our humanity.

"Beth's insight and intuition are inspiring. Her efficiency and flexibility make her a pleasure to work with." --Lisa Belt, PTA president Ockley Green Middle School
