How Does Your Heart Feel?

by Korekara Taiko

You will use the Japanese art of paper folding, called Origami. You will use geometric folds to create a paper heart that expresses how you are feeling.

Learning Target

● I can be mindful of my feelings and learn to express them through Origami.

Materials

● Square Piece of Construction Paper or a Piece of Paper
● Pen
● Colored Pencils & Paper for Reflection

Instructions

1. Let’s start by making a square piece of paper.

2. Now that your paper is ready, take one deep breath. Ask yourself how you feel. With your pen write your feeling(s) on your square piece of paper.

Reflection

Write in your journal or draw in your sketchbook

● Take a moment to think about the feeling(s) that you wrote in your heart. Sit with these words and let them be. Ask yourself what you need, and write down what could help you move forward.
● Get out your colored pencils and paper to draw a picture about your feelings.
● Talk to someone about your feelings. Share your origami heart (or your reflection drawing), and talk about how you are feeling right now.

Extra

● Learn to fold new kinds of origami! Search on the internet for ‘origami for kids’ where you can learn to transform paper into animals, flowers, or other fun objects.
● Watch Michelle & Toru make their origami hearts. In the video, they wrote to a special person. You can make more origami hearts and write messages to someone in your house or you could even send (or mail) your heart to someone special. Video Link: https://vimeo.com/500344828/25c87861b0
