Speaking Out! Young Storytellers

This program offered by: Speaking Out Collective

Ignite your early learners’ passion for literacy in these PreK through 1st grade workshops and residencies that center storytelling and theatre exercises as a way for young children to share their ideas, build community with their peers, and develop confidence in themselves as the tellers of their own stories.

During each session learners will be asked to tell stories as Speaking Out! trained teaching artists (with over twenty years of arts learning teaching experience) dictate the words onto a page. The young storyteller will then become the director of their very own story as their peers act it out before their eyes! Through theatre arts, storytelling, puppetry and song, each session of Young Storytellers will build on cognitive and literacy skill development as well as social emotional learning in this interactive and welcoming environment where the child’s love of story is at the center.

Tessa believes that by creating a culture of storytelling in our classrooms through these playful strategies, students begin to see themselves as capable, confident tellers of their own stories beyond the walls of our schools.

"Tessa has a way of bringing out my students' authentic selves through play. After her residency they are more confident using their own voice, whether that's speaking in front of the class, writing their own stories, or asking a question during our lite…
