Create Your Own Art Tools: Stencils

In this workshop Cathy will lead students on an exploration of stencils as an artistic tool. Students will learn the importance of stencil use across time, from prehistoric cave painting through the street art of today. Then they will learn how to design and create their own stencils to explore a curriculum based theme. These stencils can then be used to create individual art pieces or used collaboratively as a class on a larger piece (recommend 2 sessions). This approach works well as a unit culmination project with subject integrations like science, social studies, math, social justice, and social-emotional learning. Students will take away from this project a view of the creative process as a way to communicate ideas and a willingness to create the tools they need to solve problems in their lives.
