Songwriting as Self-Expression

Lindsay (Teaching Artist) will lead the class in a group songwriting activity over five days which will include listening, harmony, melody, lyric writing, recording and reflection. Students will be encouraged to develop listening / aural skills, singing (community building), self-expression (writing / communication), mood and feeling awareness (social emotional learning / self regulation), reflection and inquiry (through listening and feedback). The structure of the 5 sessions will use scaffolding to build on the previous sessions material, eventually culminating in a finished piece. The class will work together or in small groups to compose one or more songs, depending on the goals of the residency.

About the Artist

Lindsay Clark

Lindsay Clark is a musician and songwriter bringing 10+ years of experience as an educator. Her passion lies in self-expression for healing, having turned to songwriting at young age to process her deep and complex feelings. She is a grant recipient from RACC, Oregon Arts Commission and the Holler Fund and has toured the US and Europe. She has released mulitple albums of original work, many which have been featured in NPR, Popmatters and other publications. She has taught piano and voice as well as songwriting workshops, including one at the Malmo Music Academy in Sweden in 2019. She is influenced by folk, classical, fingerstyle guitar, Appalachian music and English / Irish folk, which have culminated in a unique voice and sound. Her teaching philosophy is that music (and the arts) are a language that can be learned by any willing student or person. She focuses on social emotional learning and resiliency for students to meet challenges and explore new skills. She brings passion for the importance of the creative voice for youth, individuals and the collective world.

I don't have a quote for this specifically, but I do have a lot of parent testimonials from students I have taught. Let me know what might work or I can dig a little for something like this.
