Students will be introduced to the art of songwriting. We will explore two major elements of songwriting: lyrics and melody. Students will also work collaboratively and will practice the art of listening and building as a team.

Collaborative Song Making with Smith & Yarn
Students will practice simple song-making skills like creating rhythm, melody and lyrics. In small groups, students will each choose a song-making skill and collaborate with others to create a short musical composition about friendship.

Students will identify their mood, choose a related animal, and then compose simple animal songs with original lyrics and rhythms that reflect their mood & their animal’s behavior. Students will use lyric templates to create their own collaborative songs. While identifying feelings, and ways to express them, students will explore the use of words in music.

Students will explore the cultural background of Ghanaian drumming and compose their own drum rhythm to express their emotions, uniting as a drumming classroom community.

Students will learn about patterns in art and in nature, and then create patterns themselves using their voices and/or their bodies. Throughout the lesson students will be creating patterns around both their present state of mind, and how they see themselves.

In this lesson, students will learn some basic musical concepts, how music affects our emotions and how we can use music to self regulate. Students will also create their own rhythms and simple “songs” to express their emotions and share them with others.

Students will learn the basics of rhythm, create their own beat as a means of self expressing their own ideas and practice playing their beat with others to create a collaborative rhythmical composition as a group.

Students will learn about rhythm, find their unique rhythm voice, and compose a rhythm beat. Throughout the lesson, students will build a sense of mindfulness and respect for themselves, their peers, and their instruments.

Students will learn to express their thoughts and emotions creatively by writing and performing their spoken word poetry. They will explore the art of rhythm, rhyme, and storytelling, using their voices and words to communicate their ideas confidently. The focus will be on self-expression, creativity, and collaboration, helping students connect with their peers through the vulnerability of sharing personal poetry.
