Using things found in the world around them (a book), students will make observations and then improvise moves that feel connected to their source inspiration. Developing creativity in dance requires experimentation and exploration using a variety of sources as inspiration for movement to represent personal and/or symbolic meaning.

Students will create a dance improvisation using that expresses how they feel when they are doing an activity that brings them joy. As a part of this lesson students will deepen their self awareness, explore DANCE MOVES AND ENERGY as creative tools, and create an improvisation expressing different kinds of feelings.

Students will learn how flow, gesture and isolation can help their bodies express their feelings to others. Students will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and use their observations to express themselves through their own dance movements. Throughout the lesson, students will develop a sense of individuality and learn what makes them unique.

Observational Thinking and Dance with Nicole MCall

The focus of this lesson is to teach students Observational Thinking as a way to give feedback in an open-minded, curious, and non-judgmental manner. Students will create short dances based on a personal emotion, watch each other perform, then share observations and feedback to help each other see how their moves are understood by an audience.

In this module, students will explore the connection between their emotions and the world around them through movement. They will learn to identify various emotions, such as happiness, sadness, anger, and calmness, and express these feelings by associating them with the waves of an ocean—gentle ripples, crashing waves, and calm seas.
