The Bridge: East & West Coast Street Dances

This interactive Performance is a playful educational show intended to shed light on the many styles of street dance that we often but under the umbrella term Hip Hop. Audiences will learn where and when different street dance styles came from and how to identify them. They will see engaging vibrant demonstrations of these styles by professional dancers. They will be able to see the differences and similarities between Krump, Popping, Locking, Party Dancing, Breakin, Lite Feet, and club style dances as they are learning about the communities that created these styles.

Audience members will be a part of the show by creating rhythms, volunteering, learning how to give Hype in each of the dance styles and learning a few moves. Audience members will learn about concepts for free styling as well as come up with ideas for the performers right there on the spot. They will understand that before a dance is birthed a style of music was born first. Audiences will be taken on a journey of the history of street dance cultures from California, New York and the cities influenced by or influential to the vibrant life giving cultures of street dance from 1970 to now. Not to mention what was cooking in the 50s and 60s that helped shape the young people who brought the world together through Hip Hop Culture.

About the Artist

Bang Bang Boogie

Donna Oefinger AKA Donna Mation is an educator, performer, choreographer, actor, and percussionist. She is the artistic director and choreographer for Bang Bang Boogie and Vivan Los Elementos. Donna specializes in club and street dances from the USA including, Hustle, House, Popping, and Hip Hop as well as sacred and secular dances of Cuba and Brazil. Donna has owned her own studio for 16 years, taught in universities, studios and public schools since 2001. As a teacher, Donna is known for her enthusiasm, passion, and respect for the origins of the culture and styles of dances she shares. Her classes are fun, challenging and educational, not just about movement but also history and self expression. Donna encourages and supports her students to connect with the music while embodying movement through story telling and character creation as well as technique. Donna has danced most of her life and began her career in music and dance in 1999, which has brought her to teach and perform in various places around the world with renowned artists including Rennie Harris Pure Movement, Wyclef Jean, Pink Martini, Black Angel, Bata Ketu, and Jujuba.
