RESIDENCY GOALS
Myth, ritual, archetype are windows to self expression and are easily approachable through dance. This creates opportunity for metaphoric or abstract thinking. Students will input their own self-expression into a traditional form or subject. Body language can be non-rational and non-judgmental, collaborating through movement can create a safe environment to work empathetically with one another.
Learning dance requires spatial awareness, motor skills, understanding of rhythm and memory of sequence. All these require persistence and perseverance. To create and err together creates a fantastic social bond and solidarity.
Narrative can be used to reference concrete stories or abstract thinking. Luciana will create the content according to the grade’s curriculum and the subject we wish to enhance. Students will approach the same subject from lots of different angles and helps them integrate their individual abilities within the group.
Students will recognize their internal emotions/moods in the dance and learn to recognize it in others’ dances. Students will learn to focus and target their intention in communicating between one another.
Students will make connections between dance-making and elements of math and science.
WORK WITH STUDENTS
For example, to enhance the understanding of a pre-columbian culture students might start from learning some steps from a particular tradition and then realizing what they might mean according to how it feels to perform them. How a culture dances says a lot about it’s climate, its terrain, the social interaction and its general personality. With their bodies the children will empathize with that culture and understand facts they might be studying. They can even create a fictional dance that represents the culture or the historic moment, this would be the reverse approach. This allows for a more multidisciplinary approach in which the children might assume roles as dancers, actors, designers, etc. Luciana’s work focuses on spurring motivation so the kids develop a love for learning, art is always multifaceted and creates a state of wonder. Every subject can be approached through an artist’s lens and become magical.
