Right Brain Initiative Residency

RESIDENCY GOALS
Photography is a way for you to express yourself creatively.
Photography strengthens visual literacy and metaphorical understanding
To think critically about the choices they make through the compositions they create and develop life-long skills in composition, decision-making and design.
Photography provides strong connections to history as well as to the present and the future.
Photography enhances communication, collaboration and problem solving skills both within a group and individually.

WORK WITH STUDENTS
Week long residencies include slide presentations of photography to inspire and introduce the children to the concept of analyzing and creating strong photographs. I then introduce the basic elements of photography and camera handling. On the second day we head out to create photographs based on our project’s theme and edit and critique on the third day. The fourth day centers on writing and choosing the photographs that best illustrate our writing. The workshop culminates with the final creation of the project, an artist statement and a sharing circle.

My residencies include projects that address issues of identity and community, or a single issue, such as bullying or increasing awareness of the environment. I incorporate the concepts of Literacy through Photography developed by Wendy Ewald.

Classroom projects and their themes will be determined by dialogue with individual teachers, teams or school wide curriculum focus. I am often inspired by the curriculum of a certain class and create projects based on specific interdisciplinary subjects.

Classroom Time: 60 minute sessions are optimum
