-Chapel Theatre will work with classes to create and perform short plays in groups within their classroom.
-Students will work collaboratively with a group to create short simple plays that are devised using prompts that support classroom learning targets.
-Students will engage in a group as a member of an ensemble. They will go through the process of brainstorming, devising, writing, and performing their short plays for their classmates.
-Students will build community as they work in ensembles.
-Students will maintain a fun and positive collaborative process by engaging in “yes, and” improv technique to allow for everyone to feel comfortable and safe to share in the creative process.
Work With Students:
We will work in small groups to create and perform plays in 5 sessions. Each session we will work on devising and rehearsing in our ensemble groups. Students will perform their plays for their class at the end of the session.
Prompts will be crafted to support learning targets within the classroom. They may be crafted using anchor texts, other supporting materials, or a standard the classroom is focused on. Subject areas such as SEL, ELA, and Social Studies lend themselves naturally to storytelling. Other subject areas like Science and Math could also make for fun, creative devised plays. Here are some basic prompt examples:
SEL: Create a play inspired by the emotion you drew. (Students brainstorm emotions and each group draws one from a hat.)
ELA: Based on anchor texts. Create a play to retell the story. Add an aside to explore a character’s feelings.
Social Studies: Pick a historical figure and zoom in on an important moment in their life. Create a play that takes us into that moment. What happened and how did they feel at that moment? What did others around them feel?
Science: Create a play to show the life cycle of plant or animal in the style of comedy, drama, horror, documentary, or musical.
Math: Create a play that brings a story problem to life.
