Color Exploration and Paper Engineering Residency

Time for painting and cutting! In this residency the teaching artist will combining the wonderful No-Name Masterpiece lesson that was originally created by Annie Painter (used with permission), where the students work together to create large tempera paintings and work collaboratively to mix primary colors into secondary colors and create different marks. From this lesson the students have a good foundation of basic vocabulary terms of texture and color mixing. They will then use this knowledge too create many sheets of painted textured paper.

In the third lesson the students use these sheets of paper to discover collage and how to work with paper in the third dimension. The final project will be the creation of a collage critter that the teacher and the teaching artist will decide prior to that day. Some successful animal choices in the past have been fish and insects.

When working on these collages the students will explore the ideas of repetition and paper engineering to enhance the visual appeal of their creatures. They will also decide how to replicate the basic characteristics of that animal can be displayed in their collage.

By the end of this residency the students will have a knowledge of how to create various colors, how to collage in two and three dimensions, as well as visual artist vocabulary such as texture, dominance and repetition. A gallery show can also be a fun way to celebrate their efforts at the end.
