Animal Masks: Creation to Performance

This program offered by: Shuhe

Actor and mask maker Shuhe Hawkins delights students and teachers alike as he guides classes through the process of making and performing in animal masks. Students sculpt and use paper-mâché to create a mask in the likeness of an animal of their choosing, then bring their animal character to life through the use of voice and body movement. In a process that helps develop observation skills and artistic interpretation, Shuhe uses his experience as a performer and maker to bring out individual creativity. The residency is tailored to specific grade levels and can be connected to various curriculum points including Writing, Storytelling, Natural Sciences and Public Speaking.
The 5 – 6 day residency culminates in a short performance of an animal folktale for peers and/or family. This can also be tailored to be a 1 to 3 session workshop.
