You will learn how to express your emotions by creating Emotional Eggheads. You’ll have a chance to use a variety of art materials.
Learning Target
● I can use 3D sculpting skills to explore facial expressions.
Materials
● 2 plastic eggs
● Masking tape
● Paper clay
● Small cup of water
● Sketch paper, pencil
● Colored pencils, watercolors, brushes
Instructions
Working with paper clay: Always keep your clay covered in plastic until you’re ready to use it. To attach clay, dip your finger in the water cup to put a little bit of water where you want to connect it and gently press the parts together.
1. Cover one egg with small pieces of masking tape. This helps the clay stick on.
2-3. Take out enough clay to cover the egg. Roll it into a ball between your hands, then flatten it like a tortilla.
4. Cover the egg with clay. Connect the edges.
5. Look in a mirror. Draw a sad face, a happy face, a mad face. Choose one for your egg.
6-7. Make a nose with a small piece of clay. Attach it to the egg.
8. Roll another piece of clay into a skinny snake.
9-10. Make the mouth like your drawing.
11-12. Take a little bit of clay to roll and make eyebrows. Attach them to the face. Leave space for the eyes!
Follow all the steps with the other egg, but show a different emotion. Set the eggs in a safe place and let them dry overnight.
13-14. When your clay is completely dry, draw on the eyes. Next, add color with colored pencils or paint. Want hair? You could draw it, paint it, attach leftover clay, glue on strips of paper, yarn, string…
15. When your faces are finished, show people how you’re feeling!
Reflection
● What was your favorite part of the activity?
● What did you learn about how your face shows emotion?
● What did you learn about sculpting with clay?
Extra
● What other ways could you create art about emotions?
● Could you make an egghead puppet, a doll, or even a musical instrument?
