Exploring Movement Through Hula Hoop Dance

Exploring Movement Through Hula Hoop Dance is a multi-session residency program that utilizes skill-focused learning as a strategy to keep kids having fun while simultaneously learning about body mechanics, hand-eye coordination, dance personality, musical tempo and emotion, choreography, spatial awareness, and mind-body connection.

Hoop dance goes beyond flashy tricks because as students learn to sequence the tricks together and FLOW, they begin to unlock comfort within themselves and their bodies. Hula hooping teaches people how to dance that have never felt comfortable doing so before. It awakens creativity and physical expression. It creates a (much needed) outlet for human emotion to be processed through movement.

Hoop Dance takes students into a deeper world of awareness and inner-study. Dancing with a hula hoop is essentially like dancing with a partner. The hoop doesn’t always do what you want it to and students learn it’s more about the sensitivity, awareness, and communication between “the partners” that makes the dance flow.

Students will learn many “hoop tricks” throughout this program and the final session will culminate in either a group performance or solo skill demonstration. Sessions could be held in a large open space such as a gymnasium, or outdoors if the weather permits.
