Beginning Ballet the Black Way

Students will learn the necessary mechanics of beginning ballet, such as proper posture, turnout, movements, spatial awareness, balance, jumps and leaps, coordination in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions, pointed and flexed feet. In addition, every lesson will explore the stories of ballet history and how determined African Americans have broken through societal boundaries and inspired the industry to move towards inclusion.

Beyond the mechanics, Students will:
Build flexibility
Learn breathing techniques
Learn how to work as a team
Learn about active listening
Learn Studio & Ballet etiquette
Learn the history of Ballet in society
Learn about ballet classics such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, as well as experience ballet with cultural rhythms.

About the Artist

Jill Giedt

Jill taught, directed and choreographed musical theatre for over a decade at Park Academy. She gets energized teaching ballet and creative movement to enthusiastic Portland Public School students through community outreach programs with OBT and StepsPDX. And she brings her teaching talents to other local studios around Portland. Jill is also a resident artist with Young Audience where with dance and movement, she teaches programs that honor the African American experience and the lessons of resilience. She recently began working with the powerful and talented group at PassInArt, who embodies her mission in bringing awareness to the community about the invaluable contributions, history and culture of African Americans' in the arts.
