Volcano Race PDX will raise money for local arts education

Running a 10 or 5K has clear benefits – it’s good for your physical health, mental health and can help create a tight-knit community. Many races like to offer an added benefit, challenging participants to run for cancer research, children’s hospitals or veterans.

Next weekend’s Volcano Race in Portland steps away from that playbook with a run that benefits a different kind of public good – art education.

The race will take over Mt. Tabor (which is a volcanic cinder cone) on Sunday, Sept. 28, with a 10K, 5K and kids dash. Organized by Young Audiences of Oregon and SW Washington, the event will raise money for educational arts programming in multiple disciplines and cultures around the region.

The Volcano Race is a re-branded version of the organization’s previous fundraiser, the Young Audiences’ road race, marking its first year with the new name and location.

Young Audiences also helps schools organize their own fundraisers, called Run for Arts, every spring and fall. Those runs have helped raise $14 million in arts funding for schools over the last 35 years, according to the organization.

The Volcano Run will be its big annual event, hosting a beer garden, a “family art zone,” live music and pre-run yoga in addition to the races.
